Amoryn Drug Interactions

The information on this page is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Consult with your doctor before taking any new dietary supplement, including AMORYN.

Certain drugs should not be taken with AMORYN. Please review the list below, and consult your physician before taking AMORYN (or any other supplement) with prescription medications. (It may be helpful to provide your physician with a printed copy of this page and the ingredients page.)

SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and SNRI Antidepressants
Including Celexa® (citalopram), Lexapro® (escitalopram oxalate), Luvox® (fluvoxamine), Paxil® (paroxetine), Prozac® (fluoxetine), Zoloft® (sertraline), and SNRIs such as Cymbalta® (duloxetine) and Effexor® (venlafaxine)

Individuals taking SSRI anti-depressants should consult a physician before taking AMORYN. Combining SSRI medications with the 5-HTP in AMORYN may increase the risk of developing a condition called serotonin syndrome. Though AMORYN only contains a low dose of 5-HTP, caution is advised. Individuals who wish to take AMORYN with their current SSRI medication should do so only with the guidance of the prescribing physician.

Tricyclic Antidepressants
Including Elavil® (amitriptyline), Tofranil® (imipramine)

Individuals taking tricyclics should consult a physician before taking AMORYN.

Oral Contraceptives
AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraception (i.e. birth control pills). The Hypericum extract in AMORYN increases the activity of the liver enzyme that breaks down estrogen-related compounds. This may reduce the availability of the contraceptive medication, resulting in decreased efficacy. Women taking oral contraception should consult the prescribing physician before taking AMORYN.

Anticoagulants
Including Coumadin® (warfarin)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of warfarin and certain other anticoagulant medications. AMORYN should be taken with anticoagulant medication only under the close supervision of a physician.

Beta-Blockers
Including atenolol (Tenormin®)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of beta-blockers commonly used to treat hypertension and angina pectoris. AMORYN should be taken with beta-blocker medications only under the close supervision of a physician.

Calcium-Channel Blockers
Including diltiazem (Cardizem®, Dilacor®), verapamil (Calan®, Isoptin®), nifedipine (Adalat®, Procardia®)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of calcium-channel blockers commonly used to treat angina. AMORYN should be taken with calcium-channel blockers only under the close supervision of a physician.

Cardiac Glycosides
Including digoxin (Lanoxin®)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of digoxin and certain other glycosides commonly used to treat heart failure and atrial fibrillations. AMORYN should be taken with cardiac glycosides only under the close supervision of a physician.

Chemotherapy and Other Anti-Cancer Drugs
Including irinotecan, paclitaxel, Gleevac® (imatinib), VePesid® (etoposide)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of certain anti-cancer drugs, including certain types of chemotherapy. AMORYN should be taken with anti-cancer drugs only under the close supervision of a physician.

Immunosuppressants
Including cyclosporine (Neoral®, Sandimmune®), tacrolimus

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of cyclosporine and certain immunosuppressants commonly used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. AMORYN should not be taken with immunosuppressant medications.

MAOI (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)
Including Nardil® (phenelzine), Parnate® (tranylcypromine), Marplan® (isocarboxazid)

AMORYN should not be combined with MAO inhibitors (MAOIs). Do not take AMORYN less than two weeks after discontinuing MAOI medication.

Methadone
AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of methadone, commonly used to treat heroin addiction. AMORYN should be taken with methadone only under the close supervision of a physician.

Tramadol
Including Ultram® and Ultracet®

Tramadol inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, and when taken with the 5-HTP in AMORYN may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. AMORYN should be taken with tramadol only under the close supervision of a physician.

NNRTIs (Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors)
Including delavirdine (Rescriptor®), efavirenz (Sustiva®), nevirapine (Viramune®)
